  • Aboul Gheit meets with newly appointed Representative of UN Secretary-General for Libya

    The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received Ms. Hannah Tetteh, the newly appointed Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Libya and head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), at the General Secretariat headquarters on 12 March. The meeting provided an opportunity for an in-depth exchange of views on the latest developments in Libya.  

    Gamal Roshdy, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit welcomed the ongoing efforts of the UN Mission, reaffirming the League’s steadfast commitment to supporting all initiatives that align with the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and peace in this cherished Arab nation.  

    Roshdy further explained that discussions encompassed efforts to bolster international cooperation on Libya, particularly through revitalising the work of the Quartet, which brings together the League of Arab States, the United Nations, the African Union, and the European Union. The Secretary-General also attentively listened to the UN envoy’s briefing on the latest developments in Libya, during which she underscored the importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination within the League of Arab States to facilitate the resumption of constructive dialogue among Libyan stakeholders.
