  • The Statute of Arab Sports

The establishment of Arab sporting competitions:

The inception of Arab sporting events can be traced back to early 1947 when Mr. Abdulrahman Azzam, the inaugural Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, presented a memorandum to the League advocating for a sporting competition that would unite all Arab nations. He posited that sports were among the most effective channels for galvanising the youth of the Arab world, empowering them to shape the destiny of the Arab nation and that sports are a cherished and uplifting pursuit for young people that foster social cohesion and dissolve barriers between them.

In 1953, the League of Arab States convened a session and granted its imprimatur to the organisation of these games, entrusting Egypt with the organisation of the inaugural edition. The event took place in Alexandria from 26 July to 10 August of the same year and drew participation from eight Arab countries. Since the inception of the Arab Sports Games in 1953, 12 editions have been held, with intermittent hiatuses during the years spanning from 1976 to 1985, and 1986 to 1992. The games have persisted uninterruptedly since then.

The evolution of Arab sporting tournaments:

Arab sports tournaments have undergone remarkable advancements in terms of technical specifications, organisational quality, and participation levels. Arab nations have increasingly recognised the significance of these games, resulting in greater involvement of athletes and a broader range of sports being represented. The Arab Sports Games take place once every four years, with 12 highly successful tournaments held since their inception in 1953. The 12th edition was hosted by Qatar in 2011.

Regarded as the most prominent sporting event in the Arab world, the Arab Sports Games are attended by the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, who graces the opening ceremony of each edition. The tournament's primary objective is to foster closer ties between the Council of Arab Ministers of Youth and Sports and the Arab Olympic Committees. It acknowledges the vital role of both political and civil spheres in the development of Arab sports.

Objectives of the Arab Sports Games:

The goals of the Arab Sports Games are explicitly delineated in Article 4 of the Arab Sports Tournaments Regulations, which are:

    • Accentuating the significance of sports as a form of entertainment and a tool to nurture robust youth while also contributing to elevating the level of sportsmanship among Arab youngsters.

    • Convening the youth of Arab countries in the realm of sports to engage in equitable competition, augment interaction and cooperation, and enhance their competencies to participate in regional, continental, international, and Olympic tournaments.

    • Bestowing Arab youth with the prospect to acquaint themselves with the landmarks, accomplishments, and traditions of their fellow Arab nations.

    • Amplifying the technical abilities and experience of Arab coaching personnel.

    • Showcasing the Arab sports activities through media coverage and playing a role in the development and promotion of Olympic culture, and the dissemination of its values.

Given the significance of youth and sports affairs, Arab Ministers and officials responsible for these sectors recognised the need to harmonise their efforts across the Arab world. In pursuit of this objective and to keep pace with the evolving landscape of youth and sports activities, they established technical committees aimed at advancing both domains in the region.

Arab Ministers and officials responsible for youth and sports issued decision number 7, session 16, on 9 February 1993 to form the Youth and Sports Committees. They endorsed the internal regulations governing the operations of both committees through decision number 6352, Ordinary Session 120, Section 7, on 9 September 2003.

They amended the internal regulations governing the work of both committees through decision number 671, Ordinary Session 31, on 8 June 2008. This underscores the unwavering commitment of Arab Ministers and officials responsible for youth and sports to enhance and foster the growth of youth and sports activities in the region.
