Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received a phone call on 10 March from Ms. Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, according to a statement by Mr. Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson.
During the call, the two sides discussed developments in the regional landscape, as well as avenues for further strengthening relations between the League of Arab States and the European Union, and enhancing cooperation between the Arab world and Europe at all levels.
The spokesperson noted that the Secretary-General underscored the significance of European support for the Arab plan for early recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which was adopted at the Extraordinary Arab Summit in Cairo. He affirmed the urgency of ensuring the necessary conditions for its swift and effective implementation. Mr. Aboul Gheit also stressed the importance of upholding and consolidating the ceasefire, ensuring the phased implementation of its terms, and compelling Israel to allow the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid to alleviate the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Ms. Kallas asserted the European Union’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people, pointing out that the two-state solution remains the most viable path to resolving the conflict. She also reiterated the European Union’s firm rejection—along with that of its member states—of any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians from their land.
The conversation also addressed the latest developments in Syria, particularly in light of the recent clashes in some coastal provinces. The Secretary-General reaffirmed the League of Arab States' unwavering support for the Syrian people and its rejection of any actions aimed at destabilising the country. He also condemned the uncontrolled use of weapons and sectarian violence, stressing the need to uphold Syria’s security, stability, and territorial integrity.
