Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, inaugurated on 15 December the 16th Arab Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, convening from 15 to 19 December at the Dead Sea in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The conference is organised by the Arab Atomic Energy Agency in collaboration with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, with the presence of His Excellency Saleh Al-Kharabsheh, Jordan's Minister of Energy.
The conference is a vital platform for Arab researchers and scientists to present their scientific and applied research findings, exchange expertise and knowledge, and foster Arab cooperation in the fields of nuclear science and technology.
In his opening remarks, the Secretary-General underscored the significance of the conference and its agenda, which includes the presentation and discussion of various scientific papers. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency in unifying the efforts of Arab states, coordinating activities in the peaceful uses of atomic energy, and continually striving to enhance regional cooperation while drawing on leading international expertise in this critical field.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, noted that Mr. Aboul Gheit called for adopting a forward-looking philosophy grounded in development and modernity. He affirmed leveraging the untapped potential and resources of many Arab countries to accelerate progress and achieve comprehensive sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The Secretary-General also stressed the strategic role of peaceful nuclear applications in addressing numerous challenges impeding sustainable development efforts.
Furthermore, Roshdy conveyed the Secretary-General's reaffirmation of the inalienable right of all States Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to pursue the peaceful use of atomic energy. He firmly rejected any attempts to curtail this right or impose unwarranted restrictions or conditions under any pretext.
