Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit,
Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed His Excellency
Mr. Ronald Lamola, Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Africa, at the
League’s headquarters.
Gamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr.
Aboul Gheit extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guest and
congratulated him on his recent appointment.
During their discussions, the Secretary-General commended South Africa's
historic initiative in filing a lawsuit against Israel at the
International Court of Justice on charges of genocide against the
Palestinian people—an action supported by the League of Arab States and
numerous Arab and international partners.
The spokesperson further noted that the Secretary-General and Minister
Lamola reviewed the escalating regional situation, particularly Israel’s
ongoing aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, and, most recently, in
Lebanon. They discussed the collective efforts underway to halt these
hostilities, with particular attention to the outcomes of the recent
Arab-Islamic Summit and the newly signed tripartite memorandum of
understanding among the League of Arab States, the Organisation of
Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union Commission, establishing a
coordinated mechanism to support the Palestinian cause.
In conclusion, the two sides underscored the importance of sustaining
and enhancing high-level communication and coordination between the
League of Arab States and South Africa on all regional matters of mutual
interest in international fora.
