The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul
Gheit, stated that Israel’s actions against Gazans and its efforts to
depopulate the Strip reflect an alarming escalation, compounded by the
continued paralysis of the international community
and the inaction of states allied with the occupying power, effectively
rendering them complicit in Israel’s crimes.
Mr. Aboul Gheit made these remarks during his address at the Ninth
Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, which commenced on 28
October in Barcelona.
According to Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General's spokesperson, Mr.
Aboul Gheit said that this international inaction has emboldened the
Israeli occupation to extend its aggression to a regional scale,
subjecting Lebanon to a renewed tragedy of relentless
bombardment. Meanwhile, in Gaza, 90 percent of the population is now
crowded into makeshift shelters on just 10 percent of the territory.
The Secretary-General called on the attending nations to follow the lead
of the European countries that have recently recognised the independent
Palestinian state within the 4 June 1967 borders.
Mr. Aboul Gheit also urged the immediate implementation of a ceasefire
in Lebanon and the full, undiluted enforcement of Resolution 1701 to
secure stability on both sides of the border. He underscored the
international community's—and particularly Israel's
allies'—moral and political responsibility to halt this brutal war
immediately.
