His Excellency President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, on 16 October during the Secretary-General’s official visit to Ankara at the invitation of the Turkish government. The Secretary-General also engaged in discussions with Mr. Hakan Fidan, Turkey's Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that the meeting with President Erdogan centred on the precarious situations in the region, particularly the recent developments concerning the Palestinian cause and the associated confrontations, reflecting the significant interest both parties have in this cause.
The spokesman further noted that the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Turkey's steadfast support of the Palestinian cause, as articulated by President Erdogan and Turkish diplomatic efforts. He emphasised that this visit to Turkey symbolises the positive advancements that have characterised Turkish-Arab relations in recent times.
Additionally, the spokesman stated that the meeting with President Erdogan concluded with a consensus on the imperative for the international community to exert pressure on Israel to halt its brutal war on Gaza and Lebanon without delay. There was also a call for the urgent and sustainable delivery of food and medical aid to the Gaza Strip to address the needs of the population that has been deprived of essential life services.
He stressed the critical need to support UNRWA politically and financially now more than ever, to enable it to continue its essential work in assisting the resilient Palestinian people.
The spokesman noted that discussions with the Turkish Foreign Minister explored avenues to intensify diplomatic and legal efforts at the international level. The aim is to bolster momentum against the ongoing Israeli crimes in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon, and to hold Israeli officials accountable for their actions against civilians. The two sides warned of the repercussions of hostile Israeli behaviour on the stability of the entire region and underscored the necessity of pressuring Western countries to cease arms exports to Israel.
Roshdy said that both sides underscored the importance of continuing the work of the Joint Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee to advocate for the implementation of the two-state solution as the sole political resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
The spokesman pointed out that the discussions also addressed the latest developments in Libya, Syria, Iraq, and Somalia, as well as the grave situation in Sudan. The two parties reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate in restoring stability in the region, averting the threat of a regional war, and striving to achieve a ceasefire across various fronts.
