Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 25 September with Mr. George Gerapetritis, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit congratulated the Greek Minister on Greece’s election to a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term. He further expressed appreciation for Greece's principled stance on the Palestinian cause and its continued support for UNRWA, emphasising his hope for Greece's backing of resolutions related to Palestine during its tenure on the Security Council.
The spokesperson added that the Secretary-General urged the Greek Minister to recognise an independent Palestinian state based on the 4 June 1967 borders. Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the legal significance of such recognition, explaining that it would place Palestine on equal legal footing with the occupying state in any future negotiations concerning a final settlement.
The two sides also exchanged views on the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and the dangerous escalation by the occupying state in Lebanon. Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the urgent need for an immediate cessation of this brutal aggression to prevent the situation from spiralling into a full-scale regional war with catastrophic consequences for all.
