Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 24 September with Ms. Tanja Fajon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, and President of the Security Council for the month of September, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit extended his congratulations to the Slovenian Minister on her country’s assumption of the Security Council presidency, expressing his hope that Slovenia would play a constructive and supportive role regarding Arab issues presented to the Council this month. This comes in light of the grave developments in the region, particularly the brutal Israeli aggression against Lebanon and the continued crimes of the occupation in Palestine.
Mr. Aboul Gheit also expressed his hope for Slovenia’s continued support for the Palestinian cause during the remainder of its tenure on the Security Council, which will extend until December 2025. He highlighted Slovenia’s recent recognition of the State of Palestine and its balanced positions, which have been highly appreciated by the League of Arab States.
The spokesman added that the meeting focused on developments in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, and Lebanon, particularly the risks posed by escalating Israeli aggression, which threaten regional stability. The discussion was especially pertinent following the barbaric Israeli strikes on Lebanon on 23 September, which resulted in hundreds of casualties. Both sides reviewed potential diplomatic steps in the coming period aimed at achieving an immediate and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza, as well as transitioning the two-state solution from rhetoric and intentions to practical implementation.
Roshdy noted that Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the importance of strengthening coordination and consultation between Slovenia and the Arab world on all matters of mutual interest.
