    التاريخ: 2024/09/24

Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, met on 24 September with Mr. Mohamed Al-Menfi, Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that during the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the League of Arab States' steadfast commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities towards Libya, emphasising the importance of safeguarding Libya's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity. He also highlighted the pivotal role played by the Libyan Presidential Council in advancing the political process.

The two sides also addressed the grave developments in the region, particularly in light of the ongoing Israeli aggressions against Palestine and Lebanon. Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed his appreciation for Libya’s unwavering stance in solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

Roshdy further elaborated that the discussions encompassed the latest political, economic, and security developments in Libya, along with potential avenues for resolving the crisis. Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the League’s readiness to extend all forms of support and assistance to Libya, with the aim of facilitating a return to the political track through constructive dialogue. He underscored the importance of resuming Libyan-led dialogue under the auspices of the League of Arab States, working towards a consensual solution among all political factions, and advancing comprehensive national reconciliation. This, he noted, should culminate in a clear roadmap to guide Libya towards general elections, grounded in the principle of Libyan ownership of the political process.

In response, the President of the Presidential Council welcomed the League’s involvement in the intra-Libyan dialogue, stressing the need to build on this important political track moving forward.
