Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, met on 22 September with Mr. Javier Martinez-Acha Vásquez,
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama, on the sidelines
of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations
General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that
Mr. Aboul Gheit extended his congratulations to Minister Vásquez on his
recent appointment and on Panama's election to a non-permanent seat on
the United Nations Security Council for 2025-2026. Mr. Aboul Gheit
expressed his confidence that Panama would lend its support to Arab
causes, foremost among them the Palestinian cause, during its tenure on
the Council.
The Secretary-General also called on Panama to officially recognise
the independent State of Palestine, based on the 4 June 1967 borders
with East Jerusalem as its capital. He praised Panama's supportive
stance on the Palestinian cause at the United Nations, notably its vote
in favour of the General Assembly resolution last May, which affirmed
Palestine's right and eligibility for full membership in the UN.
The spokesman added that both parties exchanged views on the
repercussions of the ongoing Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, which
has led to dangerous escalations throughout the region.
