Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Mr. Tom Periello, the US envoy to Sudan, on 31 July. The meeting addressed the situation in Sudan and consultations on ways to end the crisis.
Ambassador Zaki stated that the meeting focused on preparing for the ceasefire discussions scheduled to be held in Geneva next August. He reviewed the League's position on the crisis in Sudan, emphasising the imperative of preserving Sudan's national institutions, maintaining the state's unity, and ensuring the sovereignty and integrity of its territories.
Mr. Periello briefed Ambassador Zaki on his efforts to reconcile the parties involved, stressing his commitment to ongoing consultation and coordination with the League of Arab States and to considering the League's assessment in efforts to resolve the conflict.
Ambassador Zaki reaffirmed the League's readiness to fully assume its role and provide the necessary cooperation to help Sudan emerge from this unprecedented crisis.
