Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued today by a large majority, which demands that Israel immediately cease its military operation in Rafah. He stressed that Israel’s failure to comply with this ruling would constitute a further breach of its obligations under the Genocide Convention.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman of the Secretary-General, stated that the order reflects the court’s conviction that Israel has not taken measures to meet the requests and conditions set by the court in March, thereby strengthening the charge of genocide. It also underscores the grave dangers perceived by the court regarding the ongoing attack by the Israeli army on Rafah, including forced displacement and widespread violations.
Roshdy quoted the Secretary-General, affirming that the court’s order broadens the international consensus against the continuation of Israel’s war on Gaza. He stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire and the immediate entry of humanitarian aid through all crossings to avert the threat of imminent famine for the Palestinian population. He reiterated that the ongoing attack on Rafah is a crime that must be stopped immediately.
