Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, received Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United
Nations, on the sidelines of the Arab Summit taking place in Manama on
16 May.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that
the meeting focused on the escalating situation in Gaza amidst the
ongoing Israeli aggression on Rafah, and Israel's obstruction of aid
entry into the Strip, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and pushing
the population to the brink of famine.
Roshdy conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit’s appreciation for Guterres'
unwavering and unequivocal stance during the aggression on Gaza. He
emphasised that the Secretary-General's moral compass aligns with the
values of the United Nations and international law, underlining the
imperative of defending these values in the face of the ongoing barbaric
campaign perpetrated by the occupying forces for over seven months.
The spokesman elaborated that Guterres, in turn, expressed his
participation in the Manama Summit as a demonstration of solidarity with
the League of Arab States, wishing the summit every success.
Roshdy added that the meeting also addressed several Arab issues
and crises, with particular focus on the perilous situation in Sudan,
which foreshadows further humanitarian deterioration, especially in
North Darfur. Both parties reiterated their call for an immediate
ceasefire to avert a deepening humanitarian crisis affecting the
Sudanese populace on a daily basis.
