Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit,
Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed Major General
Patrick Gauchat, head of the United Nations Truce Supervision
Organisation mission, at the General Secretariat headquarters on 17
April. The mission focuses on monitoring and ensuring the implementation
of truce agreements between Israel and its neighbouring countries.
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General's spokesperson, said that the
meeting involved discussions about the regional situation, particularly
addressing the war that Israel continues to wage against the Gaza Strip
which violates international law and humanitarian principles.
Additionally, they addressed the recent dangerous escalations and
security tensions across multiple levels, notably in recent days.
During the meeting, Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed concern that the
escalation could spiral out of control, posing a threat to security
throughout the region. He emphasised that addressing the ongoing and
dangerous deterioration in the security situation starts with ending the
daily atrocities committed by Israel in Gaza and implementing the
Council's resolution. Security necessitates an immediate ceasefire and
the delivery of humanitarian aid to the population, who are currently on
the verge of famine.
Roshdy 0detailed that the Secretary-General of the League was briefed by
Major General Gauchat on the conditions and conflicts across different
fronts monitored by the UN Monitoring Mission, including the Blue Line,
delineating the truce between Lebanon and Israel. Mr. Aboul Gheit
reiterated that political resolutions remain the most effective means to
ensure security for all parties. However, achieving such resolutions
remains challenging due to the Israeli occupation's persistence in
pursuing its objectives through military force and its ongoing targeting
of civilians.
