Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, joined the inaugural meeting of the Arab Ministerial Working
Group on 6 March. Chaired by the Federal Republic of Somalia, the group
includes members from Bahrain, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt,
Mauritania, and the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States.
This session took place on the sidelines of the League Council meetings
at the ministerial level during its 161st ordinary session at the
General Secretariat's headquarters.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that
Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the crucial significance of supporting the
security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of
Somalia. He underscored the League's complete solidarity with the
federal government's unwavering endeavours to counter threats to the
nation's unity and stability. This commitment was reaffirmed through
League Council Resolution No. (8988) on 17 January 2024 during its
extraordinary session titled "Supporting the Federal Republic of Somalia
in confronting the attack on its sovereignty and territorial
integrity."
Mr. Aboul Gheit outlined the comprehensive efforts and actions
taken by the General Secretariat and Arab groups in New York, Vienna,
and Geneva to implement League Council Resolution No. (8988) aimed at
supporting Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He
emphasised the League's readiness to collaborate with the Somali federal
government, as well as with all partners, regional and international
organisations, to bolster the ongoing journey of resilience towards
attaining peace, stability, and development across the nation.
