Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, received Mr. Mohamed Ali Omar, Minister of State and Acting
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal
Republic of Somalia, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat on 5
March. This meeting took place a day before the League Council convened
at the ministerial level in its 161st ordinary session.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that
Mr. Aboul Gheit affirmed the League's supportive stance towards Somalia.
The League of Arab States stands in solidarity with Somalia in
defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while rejecting the
memorandum of understanding signed between Ethiopia and the
"Somaliland" region last January.
Roshdy explained that the minister conveyed the gratitude of His
Excellency the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia for the
League’s support for the unity and sovereignty of Somalia, as well as
its robust position regarding the threats facing the country. He
acknowledged the League’s ongoing efforts in this regard.
The spokesman indicated that the two parties discussed ways and
procedures to implement League Council Resolution No. 8988, dated 17
January 2024, regarding support for Somalia in confronting the attack on
its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The focus was especially on
the Arab Ministerial Working Group formed by the Secretary-General to
follow up on the implementation of the decision. They emphasised the
group's significance as a crucial political message to support the
sovereignty and unity of the country. Additionally, they exchanged views
on the work plan of this group in preparation for presenting the issue
to the League Council at its 161st ordinary session and the upcoming
Arab Summit in Manama on 16 May.
