Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, denounced the United States' veto, which blocked a draft
resolution submitted by Algeria on behalf of the Arab group. The
resolution called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip due to
humanitarian concerns.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said Mr.
Aboul Gheit expressed "deep regret over the US intervention, marking the
third occasion since the crisis began." Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised "the
US' political and moral responsibility for prolonging the Israeli
offensive in Gaza."
Mr. Aboul Gheit stated, "The American positions undermine the
credibility of the international system and contribute to the paralysis
witnessed by the United Nations, providing political cover for Israel to
continue its aggression in the face of international incapacity to halt
daily heinous crimes against Palestinian civilians."
Roshdy added that the draft resolution represents a balanced
stance, prioritising humanitarian aspects and aiming to save hundreds of
thousands of vulnerable Palestinians from the ongoing Israeli
onslaught, starvation, and disease.
