Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, engaged in the celebration of Arab Sustainability Day on 20
February at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of
Arab States.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that
Mr. Aboul Gheit delivered a speech praising the significance of this
celebration which aims to disseminate and promote sustainability
concepts in the Arab world. He also reviewed initiatives focused on
achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.
The event included the honouring of distinguished Arab figures and
organisations, notably Her Excellency Mrs. Nevine Al-Qabbaj, Minister of
Social Solidarity of the Arab Republic of Egypt. She was recognised for
her notable contributions to development in Egypt, including her recent
initiative to establish a mechanism connecting social development
institutions and banks under the League of Arab States' umbrella.
Mr. Aboul Gheit acknowledged the distressing conditions faced by
the Palestinian people at the hands of the occupying power, emphasising
the long-lasting impact of intentional destruction and losses. He
expressed strong opposition to Israeli threats to invade Rafah, a city
now serving as the last refuge for over one and a half million
Palestinians, Roshdy stated.
The spokesman added that the Secretary-General underscored the
significance of partnerships in achieving sustainable development goals.
Since adopting the Sustainable Development Plan in 2015, the League of
Arab States has initiated various programmes and activities to foster
collaboration among regional countries and organisations. Mr. Aboul
Gheit highlighted the recent Arab Vision 2045, a joint effort by the
League's General Secretariat and ESCWA, aiming for economic, social, and
environmental development grounded in principles of peace and justice.
