Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab
States, participated on 8 February in the celebration of the Honorary
Day of the League of Arab States at the Doha 2023 Horticultural Expo.
Mr. Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, reported
that Mr. Aboul Gheit delivered a speech during the ceremony, attended
by His Excellency Mr. Abdullah bin Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Attiyah,
Minister of Municipality and Chairman of the National Committee for the
Doha Horticultural Expo on the Qatari side. At the outset, Mr. Aboul
Gheit extended congratulations to the leadership and people of the State
of Qatar for organising this unique edition of the Horticultural Expo.
This marks the first time such an event is held in the Arab region,
following its exceptional hosting of the FIFA World Cup.
Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed his sincere gratitude to the State of
Qatar, acknowledging its unwavering efforts in facilitating the
establishment of the League of Arab States' pavilion for international
participants at the Expo. Qatar's support has been instrumental,
enabling their participation in a notable manner. He highlighted that
Qatar's hosting of this exhibition will contribute to international
endeavours towards achieving sustainable development goals. It will also
enhance global awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and
strengthen Arab initiatives to address the impacts of climate change.
Roshdy conveyed the Secretary-General's pride in the Arabs'
historical contributions to garden landscaping, land reclamation, and
water resource preservation in desert environments. He emphasised that
Arabs have ancient civilisations where orchards thrived, and water
management and transportation techniques advanced. They have added to
this rich legacy with numerous achievements.
Aboul Gheit also highlighted the League of Arab States' efforts in
combating desertification and ensuring water security. This involves
establishing specialised organisations functioning as think tanks in the
agricultural and environmental fields, along with the creation of
specialised Arab ministerial councils.
Regarding the League’s pavilion at the Doha 2023 Horticultural
Expo, Mr. Aboul Gheit mentioned that it presents a valuable showcase of
joint Arab action and the Arabs’ future vision for a sustainable green
world. The pavilion's slogan, “Let us work together for a green Arab
world,” was chosen to represent a new concept of Arab work in
agriculture and innovation. It focuses on themes such as modern
agriculture, environmental awareness, sustainability, technology, and
innovation — in line with the vision of Expo Doha for Horticulture.
The honorary ceremony included a visit to the State of Qatar's
pavilion at the exhibition and featured a military musical performance.
