Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the judicial order issued by the International Court of Justice regarding Israel's commission of genocide in Gaza. He emphasised that "the initial ruling marks a triumph for human values and resolves the controversy surrounding the blatant violation of international law and humanitarian standards evident in the Gaza war". He stressed "the imperative to fully and immediately implement the decisions outlined in the ruling."
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that the court's preliminary ruling paves the way for vigorous diplomatic and legal actions at both the Arab and global levels to halt the barbaric Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.
The spokesman relayed Mr. Aboul Gheit's statement that the emergency measures imposed by the court on Israel, aimed at preventing acts of genocide in Gaza, constitute stringent obligations for the occupying power. Compliance with these obligations is imperative and should not be violated. Additionally, these measures impose an obligation on the international community to work effectively towards an immediate ceasefire and to halt the daily crimes committed by the occupation forces in Gaza. Mr. Aboul Gheit expressed hope that the initial court ruling would lead to a complete and immediate cessation of the war.
Mr. Aboul Gheit reiterated his appreciation for the efforts of South Africa and its team of lawyers during the court sessions. He highlighted that the ruling reflects the court's conviction in the arguments presented by the team and the lack of conviction in the weak Israeli positions, which involved a significant amount of deception.
