Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received on 11 January Mr. Ramtane Lamamra, the United Nations special envoy to Sudan.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, said that Mr. Aboul Gheit congratulated Mr. Lamamra on his new position, expressing his confidence in Lamamra's abilities and his commitment to fostering balanced relations with all involved parties, aiming to facilitate a resolution to the Sudanese crisis.
The spokesperson noted that Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised the key factors influencing the League's stance on the Sudan crisis. These include the imperative need to swiftly cease the war, safeguard Sudanese lives, uphold Sudan's territorial integrity, protect national institutions, and initiate an inclusive national dialogue in Sudan.
He pointed out that Mr. Lamamra fully comprehended these guiding principles of the League's position. Mr. Lamamra shared his vision for the assigned task with the Secretary-General, centred on achieving consensus among the active stakeholders in Sudan, whether civilian or military. The objective is to halt the escalation of the conflict and return to a comprehensive political process, ultimately safeguarding the Sudanese people and the state from imminent threats.
