Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, described as a "positive step" the agreement between Yemeni parties to adopt several measures. The agreement includes a ceasefire and initiatives to enhance living conditions, as well as efforts to restart an inclusive political process.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that Mr. Aboul Gheit sees this agreement as a fresh opportunity to address the aspirations of the Yemeni people. It instills hope in alleviating human suffering in Yemen and sets the stage for an inter-Yemeni political dialogue leading to lasting peace. He emphasised the priority of tackling humanitarian crises and ensuring the country's security without posing threats to neighbours.
The Secretary-General urged all Yemeni parties to exercise utmost restraint during this stage to ensure the success of the agreement and overcome the significant challenges facing Yemen and the broader region. Mr. Aboul Gheit commended the efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, and the United Nations in supporting and guiding the Yemeni parties toward these outcomes, expressing hope for a comprehensive resolution to the decade-long Yemeni crisis based on these efforts.
