Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, emphasised the urgent need to stop the war in Gaza promptly. He called for the transformation of the current humanitarian truce into a comprehensive and complete ceasefire. The goal is to restore calm and assist the people in Gaza in reclaiming a semblance of normalcy in their lives. Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed that this responsibility extends beyond Gaza's millions; it is a shared responsibility for the future of peace in the region and stability in this part of the world.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the League, highlighted that Mr. Aboul Gheit's remarks were part of a speech he delivered before the United Nations Security Council during discussions on the situation in Gaza, coinciding with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.
During his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the critical importance of introducing humanitarian aid into Gaza through a sustainable and effective mechanism. He stressed that this effort is crucial for the millions of residents crowded into shelter tents and UNRWA schools in the south. Mr. Aboul Gheit stressed the need to prevent the unacceptable scenario of Palestinians succumbing to hunger or disease instead of being victims of bombings.
Mr. Aboul Gheit also asserted that “those seeking to address the Gaza tragedy and prevent its recurrence must prioritise achieving the two-state solution as quickly as possible. Gaza is a part of the Palestinian cause, and resolving its problems is contingent on addressing and settling the broader issue.”
In his address, Mr. Aboul Gheit conveyed the widespread anger and feelings of betrayal within Arab and Islamic communities, emphasising the departure from the established global order. He appealed to nations to adopt positions grounded in humanity and morality, transcending considerations of religion, race, or nationality. Mr. Aboul Gheit urged for a resolute rejection and condemnation of civilian casualties, advocating for a principled stance against violations of international law and condemning perpetrators, irrespective of their affiliation.
