Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, denounced Israel's recent condemnation of United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, describing it as a blatant act of terrorism and an attempt at moral and political coercion. He emphasised that Guterres, in his address to the UN Security Council, exhibited a principled and morally sound stance in line with his responsibilities and the integrity he upholds as the head of the United Nations.
The Secretary-General made these remarks in press statements before his departure from New York to return to Cairo following his participation in the UN Security Council session dedicated to discussing the developments in Gaza.
Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored that Guterres' speech upheld the principles of international law and international humanitarian law, which form the bedrock of the United Nations' work. He expressed full agreement with Guterres' assertion that "at a critical moment like this, the principles must be unequivocal, especially in safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of civilians."
Mr. Aboul Gheit further noted that the disgraceful attack against Guterres seeks to stifle any voice that articulates the glaring truths he conveyed in his speech. Guterres highlighted that "the attacks by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their land steadily devoured by settlements."
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States called upon all parties to rally behind Guterres in the face of the unjust aggression from Israel, which aims to silence his voice and subject him to blackmail.
