Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, has expressed his deep disappointment in response to the failure of the UN Security Council to pass two resolutions related to the situation in Gaza. He said that this failure is indicative of a significant lack of true international commitment to ending the military operation conducted by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip, despite the glaring violations of international humanitarian law through the deliberate targeting of civilians.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit participated in a UN Security Council discussion two days ago, delivering a speech that echoed the Arab position. In this speech, he called for an immediate ceasefire, the establishment of a swift and sustainable mechanism for delivering humanitarian aid to the Palestinians in Gaza, and condemned the forced displacement of the population.
Roshdy quoted the League's Secretary-General as stating that the UN Security Council's failure to reach a resolution raises grave concerns about its credibility and its ability to fulfil its primary mission of maintaining international peace and security. This is particularly troubling since the call for an immediate ceasefire was the primary reason for the inability to adopt the two resolutions.
Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored that there are international forces opposing a ceasefire, instead insisting on allowing Israel to continue devastating the Gaza Strip and targeting civilians under the pretext of self-defence. He noted that this stance, apart from its moral and political shortcomings, exacerbates the conflict and potentially widens its scope. He urged those advocating for the continuation of this war, with all its tragic consequences, to reconsider their positions and recognise the far-reaching consequences of permitting Israel to engage in acts of violence and destruction.
