Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, visited Baghdad to attend the opening of the 39th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Justice.
During his visit, Mr. Aboul Gheit held meetings Iraqi Prime Minister Mohamed Shiaa Al-Sudani and Mohamed Al-Halbousi, the Speaker of the House of Representatives. He also conducted consultations with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Fouad Hussein, stated Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General.
Mr. Aboul Gheit's discussions in Baghdad primarily revolved around the alarming developments unfolding in Gaza. He carefully listened to the Iraqi government's perspective on how to support the Palestinians in Gaza and address the genocide Israel is conducting through the siege, collective punishment, continuous bombardment, and the enforced displacement of civilians, the spokesman added.
The Secretary-General underscored the need for establishing a humanitarian corridor to deliver aid to Gaza urgently. He emphasised that the international community bears a responsibility to restrain the senseless and aimless Israeli bloody aggression, which only seeks to exact revenge on innocent civilians in Gaza, nearly half of whom are children.
Roshdy elaborated that Mr. Aboul Gheit's discussions with Iraqi officials also touched upon the potential risks associated with the conflict's expansion. They stressed the imperative of intensifying communication to expedite a ceasefire and prevent the situation from further deteriorating, which could impact stability in the entire region. Additionally, they emphasised the importance of immediate efforts to deliver vital assistance to the Palestinian people.
