Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Mr. Moussa Faki, the Chairman of the African Union Commission, on 15 October. The meeting revolved around the unfolding events in Gaza.
Both the Secretary-General and the Chairman of the Commission unequivocally condemned the killing of innocent civilians. They emphasised the importance of ensuring the protection of Gaza Strip residents. Furthermore, they stressed the immediate need to establish humanitarian corridors for the swift delivery of medical and relief aid to the Strip, alongside an urgent halt to all forms of escalation.
According to Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Aboul Gheit and Faki said they welcome the organisation of the forthcoming fifth Arab-African summit, scheduled to be hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in November. This summit is expected to provide a strategic boost to collaborative efforts between the two regions. It will encompass discussions on various topics of shared interest, aimed at advancing their common objectives and the well-being of their respective populations. This cooperative approach is expected to play a significant role in achieving regional stability, peace, security, and the ability to confront common challenges.
The spokesperson also noted that the two officials exchanged insights on the ongoing situation in Sudan. The Chairman of the Commission presented the African Union's perspective on resolving the Sudanese crisis, set against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. In response, Aboul Gheit expressed his gratitude for the African Union's efforts concerning the Sudanese crisis. He reiterated the League of Arab States' commitment to addressing the Sudanese crisis by seeking a sustainable and comprehensive ceasefire and facilitating a comprehensive national reconciliation process through the Jeddah Declaration and the neighbouring countries' mechanism. The overarching goal is to prevent the collapse of Sudanese national institutions.
