Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received a phone call from Celso Amorim, the Foreign Affairs Advisor to the President of Brazil. Amorim expressed a keen interest in understanding the League of Arab States' perspective on the concerning developments unfolding in the Gaza Strip.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that Mr. Aboul Gheit updated Amorim on the current situation, particularly in light of Brazil's assumption of the presidency of the United Nations Security Council. This role bestows significant responsibility on Brazil to take action to halt the aggressive Israeli attacks on Gaza's civilian population.
Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised the gravity of recent Israeli actions, specifically their attempts to forcibly relocate residents from the northern Gaza Strip to the southern region. Such actions represent a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, the spokesperson added.
Mr. Aboul Gheit elaborated to the Brazilian official on the severe risks of pushing the Gaza Strip into an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. He highlighted that Israeli military operations appeared to be driven by a vengeful frenzy, disregarding international humanitarian law, which prohibits the forced displacement of civilians under occupation, as outlined in the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Mr. Aboul Gheit underlined the shared responsibility of the international community, especially the member states of the Security Council, including Brazil in its current leadership role, to restrain Israel's actions and establish clear boundaries for these practices.
Roshdy stated that both parties reached a consensus on the immediate necessity of a ceasefire and the facilitation of humanitarian aid entry into the Gaza Strip to alleviate the suffering of its population.
