Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League
of Arab States, has urgently called for an immediate cessation of
military operations in Gaza. He reiterated his previous warnings,
emphasising that Israel's violent and extremist policies are a ticking
time bomb that undermine the prospects for regional stability in the
foreseeable future.
The
official spokesperson for the Secretary-General asserted that the
ongoing cycle of armed confrontations between the two sides is pushing
the region further away from any genuine opportunities to attain
stability or peace in the near term.
Furthermore,
he stated that the Secretary-General firmly believes in the
international community's responsibility for the current situation. This
responsibility arises due to the lack of a substantial response to the
provocative actions of the Israeli right-wing, which target Islamic holy
sites and oppose the two-state solution. These actions are designed to
thwart the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on
the 1967 borders.
