Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, inaugurated the 112th ordinary session of the Economic and Social Council at the ministerial level on Thursday, 31 August at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States.
According to Gamal Roshdy, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Mr. Aboul Gheit commended the Council's pivotal role in coordinating economic and social matters to promote collaborative actions within the Arab community. He also highlighted the Council's oversight of the agencies operating under this framework.
During his speech, Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the importance of the session, which precedes the fifth Arab Development Summit: Economic and Social, scheduled for November in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
Mr. Aboul Gheit focused on the summit's central theme – Arab food security. He emphasised this concern in light of unsettling information related to grain trade and its supply chains, along with other worrisome indicators tied to the impact of climate change on food security, particularly in Arab nations.
The spokesperson explained that the Council's agenda encompasses various other subjects. These topics range from devising strategies to bolster the Palestinian economy, given the challenges posed by the practices of Israeli occupation, to extending support and aid to the Palestinian population in countering financial hardships and unjust economic sanctions imposed upon them.
