Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, has issued a condemnation of the Israeli authorities for allowing a provocative demonstration by the Israeli right-wing in the occupied city of Jerusalem, known as the "flag march."
Mr. Aboul Gheit emphasised that such actions, which are taking place under the protection of the Israeli government and with the participation of some of its symbols, only serve to exacerbate tensions and push the situation in the occupied territories towards the brink of an explosion.
Counsellor Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, also relayed Mr. Aboul Gheit's condemnation of the continued settler incursions into the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which are being led and encouraged by the right-wing Israeli government and its members. Given that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is one of the holiest places for Arabs and Muslims, such incursions have been deemed as provocative and a direct affront to their religious sentiments.
During his speech at the ministerial meeting held in Jeddah on 17 May, in preparation for the summit scheduled for the following day, Mr. Aboul Gheit called on the international community to take a firm stance against the practices of the right-wing Israeli government, which he characterised as full of extremism and hatred. He urged the international community not to remain silent, as such silence only serves to encourage extremists to continue their dangerous approach.
