Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, called for the avoidance of escalation, the prioritisation of the supreme interests of the Yemeni people, and strict adherence to the unity of the country, in light of the recent developments in the governorates of Hadramout and Al-Mahra. He added that these developments further complicate the Yemeni crisis and undermine the principle of Yemen’s territorial unity.
Mr. Aboul Gheit reiterated the unified Arab position affirming commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, the rejection of any interference in its internal affairs, and the continued support for the legitimate Yemeni government led by the Presidential Leadership Council.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit urged the Yemeni parties, particularly the Southern Transitional Council, to adhere to de-escalation, refrain from undermining the unity of the country, and spare the Yemeni people further negative repercussions.
The spokesperson explained that the southern issue has well-known historical and social dimensions that must be addressed within the framework of a comprehensive political dialogue among Yemeni parties, with a view to reaching a sustainable settlement that tackles the root causes of the crisis. He stressed that resolving the problems can only be achieved through dialogue, not through the imposition of faits accomplis or by threatening the unity of the country.
