During his participation in the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkey, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, held a meeting with President Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.
Gamal Roshdy, the Secretary-General’s official spokesperson, stated that Mr. Aboul Gheit began the meeting by commending the recent positive strides in the relationship between Erbil and Baghdad, underscoring the importance of preserving this constructive momentum and fostering a spirit of mutual goodwill and sincere engagement to resolve outstanding issues.
The spokesman added that the Secretary-General listened attentively to President Barzani’s perspectives on a range of regional matters, expressing appreciation for his measured and pragmatic approach to addressing the complexities surrounding the Kurdish issue in various countries across the region.
Mr. Aboul Gheit reaffirmed the League of Arab States' commitment to closely following developments in Iraq, including those concerning the Kurdistan Region, and noted the significance of the parliamentary elections held on 20 October 2024, which were observed by a delegation from the League’s General Secretariat.
For his part, President Barzani reiterated his commitment to continued engagement and cooperation with the League of Arab States and expressed his keen interest in maintaining dialogue and consultation on all matters that would enhance Iraq’s ties with its Arab environment and serve the interests of all segments of the Iraqi people.
