Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, vehemently condemned the heinous and coordinated ground and aerial assaults carried out over the past three days by the Rapid Support Forces on the city of El Fasher, as well as on the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps for internally displaced persons. These brutal attacks, as reported by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, have claimed the lives of over 100 people—including 20 children and 14 staff members of international relief organisations—and left nearly 200 wounded.
The League of Arab States regards this deliberate targeting of innocent displaced civilians as a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and a breach of Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024), which explicitly called on the Rapid Support Forces to lift the siege on El Fasher, de-escalate hostilities in and around the city, and withdraw all combatants endangering the safety and security of civilians.
The League aligns itself with the United Nations in demanding accountability for those responsible for these attacks against civilians.
Zamzam and Abu Shouk remain among the largest displacement camps in Darfur, sheltering more than 700,000 individuals who have fled successive waves of violence since 2003. These vulnerable populations now find themselves once again trapped amid deadly hostilities, with no refuge in sight. The humanitarian tragedy is further compounded by the shelling of vital water sources and the depletion of food supplies.
