The League of Arab States: A journey of giving and resilience

The League of Arab States marks its 80th anniversary on 22 March of this year, commemorating eight decades of diplomatic and strategic engagement in the service of the Arab world. Established in 1945, the League of Arab States stands as the world's oldest regional organisation, predating the United Nations. Its founding was a direct response to the growing call for Arab unity, the struggle for liberation from colonial rule, and the pressing political challenges facing the region at the time. From its inception, the League has sought to strengthen ties among member states by harmonising positions and fostering cooperation across various fields.

Over the course of its history, the League of Arab States has navigated critical turning points that have left an indelible mark on the political landscape of the Arab world. Despite formidable challenges, it has remained steadfast in its commitment to enhancing cooperation in key areas essential for comprehensive development and the advancement of a prosperous future for Arab citizens. The League has played a pivotal role in addressing major regional crises, contributing to the liberation of several Arab nations from colonial rule, and championing collective Arab interests on the global stage.

At the heart of its diplomatic mission lies the defence of the Palestinian cause, which today stands at an unprecedented historical crossroads, particularly in light of the ongoing war of extermination against the Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip. In response, the League of Arab States continues to work towards a unified Arab stance, striving to articulate a clear vision that reinforces the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Within this framework, the League has achieved significant milestones, with joint Arab efforts yielding the adoption of numerous strategic initiatives and development projects across various sectors. Moreover, it has played a key role in deepening Arab relations with major regional and international actors, fostering strategic partnerships to ensure a balanced and effective approach to the complex geopolitical challenges of the modern era.

In the economic sphere, the League of Arab States has achieved fundamental and tangible progress. The launch of the Arab Free Trade Area in 2005 marked a cornerstone in the pursuit of Arab economic integration, paving the way for the establishment of the Arab Common Electricity Market in 2024. This milestone represents the realisation of a shared Arab vision aimed at strengthening cooperation in the energy sector, unlocking new prospects for development, and securing a more prosperous future for generations to come.
