The Economic Affairs Sector, in collaboration and coordination with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and with the participation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) – West Asia Office, convened a consultative meeting on 25–26 February to address the environmental dimension of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting, held under the theme "Comprehensive Environmental Solutions Based on Science to Enhance the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals," explored evidence-based approaches to advancing sustainable development in the Arab region.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, head of the Economic Affairs Sector, said that the meeting was convened in implementation of Resolution 661, issued during the 35th session of the Council of Arab Environment Ministers on 17 October 2024, in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It was held as part of the preparatory process for the Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2025, which is scheduled to take place in April under a joint theme with the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development: "Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Science-Based Solutions for the 2030 Agenda to Ensure That No One Is Left Behind."
As the Arab regional consultative meeting on the environmental dimension of the SDGs, this gathering serves as an integral component of the preparations for the High-level Political Forum. This year's discussions particularly focused on environmental solutions to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the Arab region. Key topics included SDGs related to health, gender equality, economic growth, marine and ocean conservation, and strengthening global partnerships for sustainable development.
