Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed Lebanon's election of a president for the republic and congratulated General Joseph Aoun on his election, following his receipt of the Lebanese Parliament’s confidence on 9 January. This development marks the conclusion of a prolonged presidential vacancy that had exacerbated Lebanon's multifaceted crises.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit's high regard for Aoun's tenure as Commander of the Lebanese Army since 2017. He praised Aoun’s unwavering dedication to his country and his leadership in critical battles, during which the Lebanese Army valiantly confronted significant threats. The Secretary-General also lauded Aoun's wisdom in safeguarding Lebanon's security, stability, and civil peace during a period marked by severe challenges and crises.
Roshdy emphasised that Lebanon now stands at a pivotal juncture, with an opportunity to turn a new page that restores the nation's vitality and renews public trust in its governing institutions. He underscored the importance of adhering to principles of sovereignty, national independence, and social cohesion while resisting the perils of external interference.
Mr. Aboul Gheit extended his sincere wishes to President Joseph Aoun for success in navigating the country through this critical phase, addressing pressing challenges, and fulfilling essential obligations. He expressed optimism about Aoun’s vision and commitment to Lebanon and the Arab world, expressing confidence in his leadership during this delicate period.
Moreover, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the League of Arab States’ continued support for Lebanon and its people. He affirmed the League’s readiness to cooperate with the new leadership in efforts to strengthen Lebanon's security, sovereignty, stability, and recovery in the shortest possible time.
