Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's vote in which 137 countries supported a resolution calling upon the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue a legal opinion regarding Israel's accusations against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the occupation authorities' decisions to prohibit its operations in the occupied territories.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, conveyed Mr. Aboul Gheit's appreciation to Norway for introducing the resolution, acknowledging Oslo's steadfast commitment to defending Palestinian rights.
Roshdy emphasised that the overwhelming support for this resolution reflects a global consensus rejecting the occupation authorities' attempts to impede UNRWA's mission in the Palestinian territories. Furthermore, it highlights growing international alarm over the potential humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza should UNRWA's essential operations in the Strip cease, as sought by Israel.
