  • General Secretariat marks Arabic Language Day
    Date: 18/12/2024
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector - Department of Culture and Dialogue of Civilisations) is hosting a celebration of the Arabic Language Day on 18 December at the League headquarters. This occasion, established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 3190 of 1973, commemorates the designation of 18 December each year as the International Day of the Arabic Language. The resolution also marked the inclusion of Arabic among the United Nations' official and working languages.
The General Secretariat underscores its steadfast commitment to the promotion and empowerment of the Arabic language at all levels, recognising it as a cornerstone for preserving Arab identity and safeguarding the region's rich cultural heritage.
The event will be graced by the participation of Arab member states, His Eminence Dr. Nazir Ayyad, Grand Mufti of Egypt, representatives of the Arab Parliament, prominent leaders of Arab and regional organisations, heads of Arab federations, the President of the Union of Language Academies, as well as distinguished academics, experts, and civil society leaders specialising in the Arabic language.
Her Excellency Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Social Affairs Sector, announced that the agenda for the celebration includes a pivotal item dedicated to presenting the draft Arab Strategy for the Advancement of the Arabic Language under the theme, "Empowering the Arabic Language: A Symbol of Our Identity and a Tool for Its Development," along with its accompanying executive plan.
She highlighted the resolution adopted by the Economic and Social Council during its September 2024 session, which tasked the General Secretariat with updating the strategy and its executive plan in collaboration with various stakeholders. This initiative aims to align with global developments and address the ongoing challenges facing the Arabic language and Arab identity.
The programme will also spotlight critical topics, including the integration of artificial intelligence with the Arabic language and a focus on the richness of authentic Arabic poetry.
Her Excellency further noted that this year’s celebration holds particular significance, as the observance of World Arabic Language Day has been closely associated with the League of Arab States. This connection reflects deep appreciation for the League's prominent role in spearheading Arab and international efforts to promote the Arabic language, following a request submitted by the International Council for the Arabic Language.
