Arab countries commemorate "Arab Environment Day" on 14 October each year, marking the anniversary of the inaugural meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, held on 14 October 1987—37 years ago. During that session, the Council adopted several programmes aimed at implementing the Arab Declaration on Environment and Development, focusing on areas of joint cooperation such as combating desertification, reducing industrial pollution, and promoting environmental awareness. Over the years, the Council's scope of interest has expanded to include key issues like sustainable development, the green economy, the circular economy, climate change, and other factors that impact the quality of life for Arab citizens.
On this occasion, Arab countries, specialised Arab organisations, and partners of the Council organise seminars, activities, and various programs to raise environmental awareness and address pressing environmental challenges facing the Arab region.
His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Maliki, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Economic Affairs Sector, announced that this year's theme is "Rehabilitation of Lands to Enhance Resilience," a slogan adopted at the previous session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs. His Excellency highlighted the critical importance of addressing regional and international challenges to uphold environmental treaties and promote sustainable development across the Arab world.
Additionally, Ambassador Al-Maliki noted that this year's Arab Environment Day coincides with the preparatory meetings for the 35th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The League of Arab States, through its Department of Environment and Meteorology (serving as the Council's Technical Secretariat), will host a celebration of Arab Environment Day at its headquarters in Cairo on 9 October. The event will bring together experts from Arab countries, regional organisations, and civil society to spotlight ongoing efforts by Arab nations to bolster resilience in the face of drought and combat desertification.
