Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit,
Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, inaugurated on 23
December the first session of the Arab Cybersecurity Ministers Council,
held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Gamal Roshdy, the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said
that Mr. Aboul Gheit, in his opening remarks, commended the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia for its visionary initiative and commendable efforts in
establishing this pivotal council. He expressed hope that the council
would constitute a significant addition to the framework of joint Arab
action, embodying the collective aspiration of Arab nations to adapt to
the rapid technological transformations and advancements of recent
years.
Roshdy further noted that the League of Arab States, along with its
specialised agencies and ministerial councils, has demonstrated
increasing attention to the challenges and opportunities of the modern
era. Key areas of focus have included climate change, the digital
economy, and cybersecurity. These concerted efforts have yielded
numerous resolutions and strategic initiatives, endorsed at the highest
leadership levels, that can serve as valuable resources for the newly
established council. By leveraging the accumulated expertise and
decisions of specialised Arab bodies, the council is well-positioned to
lay the groundwork for a unified Arab strategy to combat cybercrime and
safeguard the integrity of Arab cyberspace.
The establishment of the Arab Cybersecurity Ministers Council stems from
the decision adopted at the Bahrain Summit, which welcomed the Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia's proposal to create a dedicated ministerial council for
cybersecurity. The council operates under the auspices of the League of
Arab States.
