  • Statement on development in Syria
    التاريخ: 2024/12/08

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States is closely monitoring the unfolding developments in Syria, which is navigating one of the most critical and perilous moments in its modern history. The current juncture necessitates that all Syrians embrace the principles of tolerance and dialogue, safeguard the rights of all segments of Syrian society, prioritise the interests of the nation above all considerations, act with responsibility, and restrain the use of arms to protect lives and national resources. Furthermore, the League underscores the importance of advancing the political transition process in a manner that is peaceful, inclusive, and secure.

The General Secretariat emphasised that maintaining Syria's unity and territorial sovereignty, while unequivocally rejecting all forms of foreign interference, remains a cornerstone of Arab consensus on Syria—principles that must be upheld and defended resolutely.

The League of Arab States urges all parties committed to regional and international stability to extend their support to the Syrian people during this challenging transitional phase. This includes lifting sanctions that hinder the country's ability to move towards broader horizons of recovery and development.

The General Secretariat reaffirms its unwavering commitment to standing by Syria—an Arab nation with a rich history and significant contributions to human civilisation—until it successfully navigates this critical phase and achieves lasting peace.

In addition, the General Secretariat reiterates its unequivocal condemnation of Israel's (the occupying power) illegal actions, which exploit Syria’s internal challenges. These include attempts to expand occupation in the Golan Heights or to unilaterally nullify the 1974 disengagement agreement, actions that flagrantly violate international law.
