The Secretary-General of
the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, received Mr. Ramtane
Lamamra, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for
Sudan, on 13 November. The two sides engaged in extended talks on the
latest developments in Sudan, given the ongoing conflict and its
profound humanitarian toll.
Gamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, noted that the
Special Envoy provided an update on the current military situation in
Sudan, alongside the initiatives he will pursue in the coming period to
bridge differences among Sudanese factions.
Roshdy added that Mr. Lamamra emphasised the significance of reinforcing
cooperation with the League of Arab States, particularly in light of
Secretary-General Aboul Gheit's initiative last July, aimed at fostering
alignment between international and regional positions.
The Secretary-General highlighted the League’s core principles regarding
the Sudan crisis, underscoring Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and
territorial integrity, the importance of safeguarding national
institutions, and the imperative of preventing any foreign interference.
He also reiterated the need for an inclusive Sudanese national dialogue
that does not exclude any side.
Both parties reaffirmed the urgency of coordinated international and
regional efforts to end the conflict and spare the Sudanese people from
the devastating humanitarian impact, including escalating fatalities,
the worsening humanitarian conditions, and an intensifying food crisis.
