Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, welcomed Mr. Andriy Sibiha, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, currently visiting the Arab Republic of Egypt, on 26 October.
Gamal Roshdy, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, said that Mr. Aboul Gheit and Minister Sibiha engaged in extended discussions on the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, the potential trajectories of this war, and pathways towards its resolution in the near future.
The Secretary-General received a comprehensive briefing from Minister Sibiha on Ukraine’s assessment of the current military situation, as well as Ukraine’s proposed initiatives and vision for ending the conflict.
Mr. Aboul Gheit underscored the Arab perspective, emphasising the importance of the international community’s consistent application of principles regarding occupation, the unlawful seizure of land by force, and the violation of human rights. He highlighted the critical need for these principles to be upheld uniformly, regardless of the crisis in question—whether in Ukraine, Palestine, or elsewhere. Within this framework, Mr. Aboul Gheit called for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine-Russia conflict that aligns with the principles of human rights and halts the loss of life.
The spokesperson further noted that the meeting addressed regional developments in the Middle East, particularly the ongoing Israeli offensives in Gaza and Lebanon, and Ukraine’s positions regarding these issues.
