The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Ahmed Aboul Gheit, participated on 22 September in the opening of the Future Summit in New York, which is being held over the course of two days in advance of the high-level segment of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Gamal Roshdy, the spokesman for the Secretary-General, stated that the General Assembly adopted the Charter for the Future, which comprises five core chapters: sustainable development and financing for development; international peace and security; science, technology, and innovation; digital cooperation; and youth, future generations and the transformation of global governance. The Global Digital Charter and the Declaration of Future Generations were included as annexes to the Charter for the Future.
The spokesman further noted that the Secretary-General is scheduled to deliver his address before presidents and world leaders on the second day of the summit. In his speech, he will highlight Arab priorities concerning various aspects of the Charter for the Future, with a particular focus on the reform and expansion of the United Nations Security Council.
