Ambassador Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, received Ambassador Richard Norland, the US Special Envoy to Libya. Following the meeting, Ambassador Zaki stated that the discussions focused on developments in Libya and consultations regarding potential solutions to the ongoing crisis.
Ambassador Zaki elaborated that there was an in-depth exchange of views on the overall situation in Libya, during which he outlined the League’s steadfast position, particularly the emphasis on preserving the unity of the Libyan state, safeguarding its territorial integrity, and ensuring that the political process remains fully under Libyan ownership. He further provided a comprehensive briefing on the League’s recent efforts and communications with the relevant parties over the past months, aimed at facilitating a rapprochement between the factions, with the ultimate goal of unifying Libya’s institutions and enabling the Libyan people to express their will through democratic elections.
The Assistant Secretary-General reiterated the League’s readiness to continue supporting the Libyan people in their pursuit of sustainable solutions.
For his part, Ambassador Norland offered an overview of the US efforts to navigate the critical situation in Libya, emphasising his commitment to consulting and coordinating with the League of Arab States and valuing the League’s assessment of ongoing initiatives to bridge the gap between key stakeholders.
