The General Secretariat participated in the summit of the member
states of the African Union High-Level Committee on Libya, convened in
Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, on 5 February, at
the invitation of the Committee's Chairman, His Excellency Mr. Denis
Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo.
Representing His Excellency the Secretary-General at the summit was
the Assistant Secretary-General, Ambassador Dr. Hussein Al-Hindawi.
During the summit, Dr. Al-Hindawi conveyed the Secretary-General's
greetings to President Nguesso and expressed appreciation for his
country's efforts in advancing the committee's tasks. President Nguesso,
in turn, thanked the League for its attendance and active
participation.
In the summit, the Assistant Secretary-General delivered a speech
on behalf of the Secretary-General, emphasising the significance of
supporting the political track in Libya. He underscored the importance
of Libyans taking ownership of the political process and adopting a
comprehensive national reconciliation approach as the foundation for
Libya's stability. The speech reaffirmed the League of Arab States'
commitment to its inherent responsibilities towards Libyans, aiming to
preserve their independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
Furthermore, the Assistant Secretary-General engaged with several
heads of delegations, ministers, and deputy foreign ministers from
member states of the committee. Discussions revolved around developments
related to the Libyan national reconciliation project and coordination
between the League of Arab States and relevant local and international
entities in this regard.
