  • General Secretariat holds 55th ordinary session of Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights
    Date: 04/02/2025

The Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights, the cornerstone of the Arab human rights system, is set to convene its 55th ordinary session in the State of Kuwait from 4 to 5 February. The session will be chaired by His Excellency Ambassador Talal Khaled Al-Mutairi, Chairman of the Committee, with the participation of representatives from relevant governmental bodies in member states, alongside entities within the joint Arab action system.

Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General for Social Affairs, affirmed that despite the progress made, and the welcomed ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the aftermath of the aggression—including grave crimes and unprecedented violations across Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories—remains at the forefront of the Committee’s priorities. This includes the continued detention of the bodies of Palestinian martyrs by the occupying power.

The Committee will deliberate on "The Role of Arab Institutions and Mechanisms Specialised in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law in Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Citizens Subjected to Serious Violations," based on a proposal submitted by the Republic of Sudan.

Furthermore, the Committee upholds its duty to safeguard common sense and noble human values by protecting the fundamental unit of society—the family—against concepts alien to Arab traditions. In this regard, and in response to a proposal by the Kingdom of Morocco, the session will discuss "Rights Related to the Family."

Additionally, the session will see the adoption of the official theme for Arab Human Rights Day 2025, observed on 16 March. The Committee will also continue its deliberations on "Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights," particularly the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence and strategies to address the challenges posed by this evolving technology to the optimal enjoyment of human rights. This discussion falls under the framework of "Emerging Issues in the Field of Human Rights," based on a proposal from the Kingdom of Morocco.

The recommendations issued by the Permanent Arab Committee for Human Rights in this 55th session will be submitted to the upcoming 163rd ordinary session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level in February 2025 for consideration and adoption.
