A delegation from the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States, led by Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, and comprising Minister Plenipotentiary Nasima Sharit, Director of the Media Department, and Minister Plenipotentiary Raed Jabouri, Director of the Organisations and Unions Department, is participating in the 44th session of the General Assembly of the Arab States Broadcasting Union. The session is being held on 15-16 January in Hammamet, Tunisia, with the presence of representatives from League of Arab States member states, as well as regional and international professional organisations and unions.
In his address, Ambassador Khattabi underscored the pivotal and dynamic role played by the Arab States Broadcasting Union in advancing and enriching joint Arab media efforts, particularly under the guidance of the Council of Arab Information Ministers. He highlighted the union's notable contributions, including its initiatives in news and programme exchange, the training and development of media professionals in member states, the establishment of professional partnerships with organisations in the audiovisual sector, and its alignment with the demands of digital and technological advancements.
Khattabi affirmed the League of Arab States' commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Arab States Broadcasting Union, akin to its collaboration with other professional unions under the League’s umbrella, in a manner that serves Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian cause. He commended the union's exceptional coverage of the Israeli aggression on Gaza.
The session witnessed the approval of the 2024 annual report, the report and recommendations of the Executive Council, and the agenda for the Arab Media Conference in its fourth edition. Additionally, the programme includes discussions on critical topics such as the role of media in combating fake news and misinformation, the evolution of radio and television in the digital era, and multi-platform broadcasting.
